I went out to check out the dilution procedure in the new protype phosphate kit, but I didn`t get a reading over 10 with the normal test, just a 5ppm. My guess is the phosphate at this site is somewhat diluted right now with the extra runoff from our spring rains. When the water gets more sluggish this summer, I can probably get a better idea about it. I ran through the dilution procedure anyway and came up with a figure of 3ppm phosphate, so if anything it is biased on the low side which I suppose is good. Will see if I come up with a figure over 10ppm this summer.25/15/2006 3:02:00 PM

The actual reading was 40ppm of phosphate. I did the test the normal way and got a very dark blue reading about the same as the 12ppm on the Oxygen scale, and then I did the dilution procedure, where you take 2.5 ml of creek water, and then dilute it with phosphate free water to the 25 ml mark. I got a reading of 4ppm on the scale, and then you multiply that by 10 and get your actual reading which was 40ppm phosphate. Also, saw lots of water striders and flying adult damsel flies, and there were patches of red slime in the still shallow spots.27/22/2006 4:08:00 PM

Saw a muskrat pop up in front of me while I was taking the habitat assesment notes. He swam a ways upstream went under a bank then came out and dove underwater.Am testing this site for the Floyd River Watershed Project for some press releases. As the Floyd is usually too boggy or too high to wade across and get stream flow and depth measurements, I will just be estimating the flow using a median reading from USGS gauging stations upstream at Alton and downstream at James City. For example Alton had 30 cubic feet per second on this day at noon and James City had 176 cubic feet per second, so am just "guesstimating" that the flow at LeMars is a median number, 103 cubic feet per second. Using this figure, I am going to come up with estimates of pounds per hour of nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, and soil as well as tons per day, to give the public a handle on how much stuff is actually going down their river. For instance I figure for this day with 5 ppm nitrate their was about 116 pounds of nitrate per hour or 1.4 tons per day.14/4/2003 11:29:00 AM

Small fish rising for bugs on surface. Barrels, tires, and other trash exposed.I estimate that the total flow is around 64 cubic feet per second, and there was .005 ounces of sediment per gallon of water or 6.46 tons of sediment per day.19/25/2003 10:29:00 AM

Could actually see a carp under the water. There is a sand or mudbar in the middle of the stream and a deep channel maybe 4 to 6 feet deeper and 10 feet wide along my side of the back along the rip-raped bank.110/21/2003 7:33:00 AM

River is cutting into the bank quite a bit, even undermining the rip-rap. They were working on the new LeMars Bike Trail this day. It is going to follow the Floyd River along the West end of town under Hwy 3 and 75, and then follow Willow Creek on the North Side of Town to link up to the Willow Creek Campground/Swimming Sandpits/ and town golf course. Should provide a really good opportunity for folks to enjoy this riparian corridor, and hopefully take an interest in the health of these waterways.25/15/2006 2:42:00 PM
